Rebel Book Club

From book smart to look smart

Intro

Rebel Book Club is a dynamic and engaging community designed for non-fiction book lovers who are passionate about personal growth, learning, and meaningful discussions. Founded to break the mould of traditional book clubs, Rebel Book Club fosters an environment where members can explore a wide range of topics, challenge conventional thinking, and connect with like-minded individuals. Each month, the club curates a thought-provoking non-fiction book, provides insightful discussion guides, and hosts interactive events to enrich the reading experience.

Challenge

  • Build a brand that matches the ethos (something that the original branding was failing to translate)
  • Develop a brand that exudes a cool, modern vibe, distinguishing it from average book clubs and aligning with the club's dynamic and rebellious spirit
  • Ensure the typography reflects the club’s fresh approach to a book club and the importance of literature, making it a central element of the brand’s visual identity

Key Ideas & Insights

Bespoke Brush Style Typeface

Inspired by the previous logo, a custom hand brush typeface was created in collaboration with Charlotte (the founder), giving Rebel Book Club a unique and personal visual identity.

Adding a modern edge

A bold condensed typeface was used to add modernity and impact, paired with a hand script font to evoke a sense of annotation and note-taking, reinforcing the club’s focus on self-improvement.

Clean typography for body text

A geometric Sans Serif typeface was chosen for body text, providing professionalism and balance against the more playful elements of the design.

Distinctive key colour

An almost neon blue was selected as the key colour, making the overall look eye-catching and divergent.

Simple illustrations to emphasise the unconventionality of the brand

Simple and loose illustrations were incorporated, complementing the typography and adding to the brand's personality.

User-friendly website design

The website was designed to be easy to maintain and update, accommodating new books, blog posts, content, and expanding cities. A bespoke signup journey was developed to simplify the membership options.

Using the community as the protagonist

Community and action are at the heart of Rebel Book Club, and we aimed to keep this essence central to the new design. While there was an appreciation for the existing logo, which had served them well up to a point, its commonly used free font lacked a unique character for the brand. We took inspiration from the old branding but refreshed it so the community still recognised the brand they knew and loved.
