Create an online hub for everything nervous

Intro

Nervous Records is a seminal American record label founded in 1991, renowned for its significant contributions to the house and hip-hop music scenes. Nervous Records has been instrumental in launching and nurturing the careers of numerous influential artists and producers, including Armand Van Helden, Todd Terry, Louie Vega and Masters at Work to name but a few. With a diverse catalogue that spans house, hip-hop, and various electronic music subgenres, Nervous Records continues to be a pivotal force of the industry.

Challenge

​​We were called in to redefine the visual identity of the Nervous Records website. We wanted to pay special attention to  keep their well-known brand elements all whilst giving it a fresh Electric Mustard spin. We needed to create a responsive design that provides an optimal viewing experience across whatever platform the audience were viewing on. It was important to build an intuitive browsing experience, making it a breeze for users to discover and dive into the label’s latest releases. And because nostalgia is always in style, we also relaunched their coveted 90s merchandise, turning it into a cult-worthy eCommerce store that’s bound to have fans buzzing.

Key Ideas & Insights

A fresh but brand-consistent aesthetic 

Starting from the ground up we designed a completely new aesthetic for the website, giving the label the online presence it deserved. The design is clear and uncomplicated, featuring dark greys and the label’s signature yellow, maintaining a modern and sleek look. We also added bold typography, high-contrast colour palettes, and minimalist design elements to enhance readability and visual impact.

Modern, mobile-responsive design

Creating a site that caters to all viewing experiences was key. Nervous Records needed a platform that shines on any device. Transitioning from a non-responsive site, we crafted a modular layout that automatically adjusts to different screen sizes. With a vast catalogue of music, it was imperative that everything  was displayed in all its glory, whether on desktops, tablets, or mobiles.

Custom release section

We developed a custom release section that elevates the browsing experience for the label's music catalogue. Each release is added to an online database, allowing for easy categorisation and filtering. Every release has its own dedicated page with track details, links to purchase and listen, and a custom Spotify integration for immediate streaming. This makes exploring and enjoying the label's music seamless and intuitive.

Creating dynamism and energy within the site

We implemented a dynamic slider that highlighted key areas of the label, enabling effortless promotion of events, releases and merchandise.

Integrated an easy-to-update eCommerce store for cult merchandise

We input a user-friendly online shop that showcases and sells the label’s merchandise and ensured the content management system (CMS) allowed for straightforward updates for the label to add, change and delete products easily.
